The implementation of the Rural Development ministry's Pradhan Mantri Grameen Sadak Yojana in Uttar Pradesh has come under a cloud following allegations of embezzlement of funds meant for construction of rural roads.

On receiving complaints of misappropriation of PMGSY funds, the Centre has asked the Samajwadi Party government in the state to get a CBI probe conducted into the allegations, official sources said.

The allegations of corruption pertain to the amount sanctioned for construction of roads in some of the village areas in the Sultanpur district, the sources said.

The funds for the scheme are provided and monitored by the central government, but the state government plays a role in the implementation of the PMGSY scheme.

The Congress-led UPA government has written to the state government amid speculations about Samajwadi Party withdrawing support to the UPA.

Samjawadi Party with 22 MPs and BSP with 21 are providing crucial outside support to the government and bailing it out in times of crisis.

The Rural Development ministry, in advising the probe, is learnt to have acted on private complaints from local activists.
