The chain snatcher who managed to escape after opening fire at police leaving two passersby injured during a chase last month, was arrested along with an accomplice, police said today.
Shakil Ahmad and his aide Amit were arrested from West Gorakh Park of Welcome area in the city yesterday after a brief chase and scuffle, a senior police officer said.
Shakil, who is said to have committed more than 200 chain snatchings and carried a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh, was one of the two snatchers who opened fire on police leaving two passersby injured during a chase on April 28. His associate Dhananjay alias Dhiraj alias Pathan was arrested then.

Following the incident, police launched an all-out offensive to nab Shakil. All methods of technical and physical surveillance were deployed in east and northeast Delhi and several raids were conducted to track him, the officer said.
On a tip off, a trap was laid at West Gorakh Park of Welcome area from where Shakil and Amit were arrested, he said adding that two country-made pistols, three live catridges and 40 gram heroin were recovered from them.
Stating that they had admitted about involvement in over 200 incidents of chain snatching and shooting, a police officer said case under appropriate sections had been registered against them.
According to police, Shakil and his gang used to snatch gold chains from women and men. In case of any resistance, they used to brandish their pistols and never hesitated to open fire.
