Tracing the journey of BJP from the Jan Sangh days, he said it had become one of the top two recognised political parties in the country ensuring a bi-polar polity.

"This was not a casual achievement but the result of systematic planning by leaders and cadre," he told the two-day state conference of Tamil Nadu unit of the BJP here.

Comparing building a party to that of a battlefield involving two armies, the former deputy prime minister said victory was determined by various factors including the Generals, commanders and strategy.

BJP veterans, the late Shyamaprasad Mukherjee and Deendayal Upadhyaya and former prime minister A B Vajpayee were the Generals who had brought the party to what it was today, ensuring a bi-polar polity, Advani said.

As part of BJP's efforts to break the Congress stronghold, it had "carefully built" relationship with leaders including late Jayaprakash Narayan, Ram Manohar Lohia and Morarji Desai.

On the yatras undertaken by him, he said they were efforts to promote "genuine secularism".

He said that if a country had to become a superpower, it could happen only with good governance, promoting welfare of weaker sections and ensuring all-round security. (MORE)
