The city is gearing up to celebrate as the creator of world famous Rock Garden, Nek Chand, turns 90 on Monday.

Chandigarh administration has drawn up plans to celebrate 40th year of Rock Garden and 90th birthday of its creator. Cultural programmes and other events have been planned over the next few days, officials said.

Starting this week, children from various city schools are visiting Nek Chand and gifting him greeting cards and other gifts.

Yesterday, a group of students from St Stephens School visited him and even went around the Garden to clean it. Nek Chand will also cut a cake on his birthday.

Built of industrial and home waste, the Rock Garden was formally inaugurated nearly four decades back and each year attracts a large number of domestic and foreign tourists.

In 1997, the Nek Chand Foundation, a registered charity, was formed with the aim of supporting the artist's work and raising awareness about the garden world-wide.
