Chandigarh to have Appellate Tribunal

People now will not have to visit Delhi for their matters pertaining to customs, excise and service tax as the regional bench of the CESTAT will start functioning here from December 1.

The upcoming bench of Customs, Excise & Service Tax Appellate Tribunal (CESTAT) will have territorial jurisdiction over Punjab, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh, said A Mohan Kumar, Registrar today.

"Appeals and applications pertaining to Customs, Excise & Service Tax arising within the territorial jurisdiction of States of Punjab, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, Union Territory of Chandigarh were being taken up at the Principal Bench of CESTAT at New Delhi.
 

Trade, industry and commerce and litigant public and institutions were put to undue hardship, expenditure and inconvenience, as a result," he said.

Establishment of a regional bench at Chandigarh will address the long felt and cherished aspirants of Justice at the doorstep, in a substantial measure, he said.

The government constituted a Regional bench at Chandigarh as per the recommendation of the President of CESTAT Justice G Raghuram.

He said Justice G Raghuram would inaugurate regional bench of CESTAT here on December 1.
