West Bengal Education minister Partha Chatterjee today said that with the change in the pattern of questions in this year's Higher Secondary examination, the topper could score over 98 per cent marks, which is unprecedented.

"We had effected changes in the pattern of questions and introduced multiple choice options to make both Madhyamik (Secondary) and Higher Secondary (HS) curriculum in sync with the present time," Chatterjee said at a programme.

Congratulating the district schools on their students making it to the top 10 merit list, Chatterjee said, "We will also inquire why students of reputed state-run schools like Hindu, Hare and Gokhale Memorial are not making it to the toppers list."

"We will sit with the management of state-run schools in the city to discuss why these schools which always figured among the top ten are not enjoying the same status any more. But the overall performance of their students remains satisfactory," he said.

West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education said in a statement that Archisman Panigrahi of Hooghly Collegiate School was the topper with 98.2 per cent marks, while Mayanka Chattopadhyay of Mahesh Sri Ramkishna Ashram Vidyalaya and Upamanyu Chakrabarty of Narendrapur Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya jointly got the second spot followed by Subham Sinha of Arambagh High School for the third rank.

A total 7.56.620 candidates appeared in the HS examinations and 84.20 per cent passed this year.
