Effecting changes in rail administration, Railway Board Member (Staff) has been given responsibility of IT functions to carry out IT-enabled measures in the national transporter in a more focussed way.

"Railway Board Member (Traffic) was earlier responsible for IT functions. Now it will be Member (Staff)," said a senior Railway Ministry official.

As a result, Centre for Railway Information System (CRIS), the technology arm of the railways, will be under the administrative control of Member (Staff).

It was felt that Member (Traffic) is heavily burdened with passenger and goods traffic-related issues while Member (Staff) could take more responsibility, the official said.

Since the railways is now focussing more on computerisation of the entire operations, it was decided to make changes to speed up the process, he said.

Earlier, the railways has changed the designation of Member (Mechanical) as member Rolling Stock and Member (Electrical) as Member (Traction) as part of the reform to end the turf war between mechanical and electrical wings.
