Chaos and confusion reigned at the venue of the chartered accountants' day celebrations as many people were denied entry despite having invitation cards.

Several chartered accountants (CAs) shouted slogans against the government as they were not allowed to enter the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, the venue of the event. Some people standing outside also tore banners at the entry gates.

One of the individuals, who crossed the barricades, was beaten up by the security personnel. Agitated CAs even threw bottles at the venue.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a special address at the function, organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) here.

Media persons who had come to cover the function were stranded for long.

About the chaos at the venue, V S Chahal, Joint Commissioner of Police (Central Range) said there was online registration for the event.

The number of registrations spiked to 30,000 whereas the capacity of the stadium is only 12,000. Before the PM's arrival, in order to control the entry into the auditorium, the gates were closed and people were stopped on the roads, he added.

Besides Modi, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia were among those who were present at the event.
