Press Trust of India Chennai
MDMK leader Vaiko today demanded that the policeman, whose hand gun went off at a police station, critically injuring a 16 year-old boy, an accused in a theft case, be charged with attempt to murder.

Vaiko said it was not acceptable that weapons provided for policemen's protection were used for "firing at innocent" persons.

"To maintain the credibility of the police force, a case of attempt to murder must be filed against Inspector Pusparaj and he should be punished," Vaiko said in a statement while demanding that the state government provide the best medical treatment for the injured boy, besides compensation for his family.

Pusparaj, whose gun went off at Neelankarai police station, seriously injuring the 16-year-old, has already been suspended.

An FIR under IPC Section 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) has been filed against him.

The boy is undergoing treatment at a private hospital.
