The special cell of the vigilance and anti-corruption bureau today filed a charge sheet before a special vigilance court here against IPS officer Tomin J Thachankary for allegedly amassing wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income.

According to the charge sheet, Thachankary had amassed wealth to the tune of Rs 79 lakh from 2003-2007, while an assessment by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs put it at Rs 59 lakh.

The Vigilance officials had taken evidences from 128 witnesses and 212 documents were produced before the court along with the charge sheet.

Kerala government had in January last year suspended the controversial IPS officer for violation of service rules. However, it was revoked in April on the basis of recommendation of a high-level committee, headed by then Chief Secretary.

The charge against Thachankery was that he made a foreign trip to Qatar while he was IG of Kannur range without obtaining necessary government permission. He allegedly met some people with fundamental links, but a probe by NIA had found no evidence of it. However, he was found to have violated All India Service Rules.
