Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan appealed to co-operative banks and charitable institutions to construct permanent cement bunds in the scarcity hit areas of the state to solve the problem of water and its conservation.

Chavan made this request yesterday when a team of officials from the Thane District Central Co-operative Bank, led by its chairman Ashok Pohekar, met him and donated a cheque of Rs 59,94,862 contributed by the bank to the CM relief fund.

Pohekar informed the Chief Minister that the bank had already successfully set up as many as 40 borewells in the scarcity hit areas of the state.

Chavan asked other banks and charitable institutions to follow suit and undertake construction of permanent bunds in the state for conserving water.
