Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan today said he would request the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to declare the Mumbai residence of Dr Homi Bhabha, the pioneer of India's nuclear program, as a national memorial.

Chavan's statement comes amid reports that 'Meherangir', the iconic bungalow once owned by the Bhabha family in Malabar Hill area of south Mumbai, is up for sale.

"The chief of Atomic Energy Commission R K Sinha approached me on the issue. The PM heads the Atomic Energy Department and through this legislature, I will request him to declare it as a national memorial," Chavan said, speaking in the Legislative Assembly today.

"Dr Bhabha laid the foundation of the nuclear research in the country," the Chief Minister said.

Chavan said he was aware of the sentiments on this issue as he once handled the Atomic Energy Department when he was a member of the union ministry.
