A chemical-laden tanker caught fire on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway today, damaging four other vehicles and disrupting traffic on the busy route, but no casualty has been reported, police and local revenue officials said.

The fire broke out in the tanker near a petrol pump on the highway at village Wadvali in adjoining Palghar district at about 1 PM. As a result, both way traffic on the highway was thrown out of gear, police said.

The tanker was completely gutted and the blaze emanating from it damaged four other vehicles, including a truck and two cars, Talasari Tehasildar Vishal Doundkar told PTI.

There was no immediate report of any casualty, he said, adding the ill-fated vehicle was transporting chemical.

Fire tenders from nearby areas and also Khanvel on the outskirts of Gujarat were dispatched to douse the flames, Doundkar said.

The cause of the fire was not yet known.

Officials from the police and revenue departments rushed to the scene, he added.
