Chg's IGAU inks pact with BARC to develop new rice varieties

Indira Gandhi Agricultural University (IGAU) here has signed a MoU with the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai, to develop new varieties of rice from the available types of fragrant rice in Chhattisgarh.

The agreement was inked yesterday between Sharad P Kale, Research Co-Coordinator, BARC and IGAU Vice-Chancellor SK Patil, a university statement said today.

The step will give a boost to researchers to develop new high variety of rice from existing traditional crop varieties in the university premises, Patil said.

Besides, researches will also be conducted in the food processing sector under the MoU, he added.

Patil said the varsity would work on induced muta-genesis of various crops.
 

Both the premier institutions will be working on the utilisation of radiation in crops.

Under the provisions of the MoU, BARC will extend a financial assistance of Rs 50 lakh to IGAU for undertaking researches besides imparting training to post graduate and PhD students of the institution.
