Former Gorkhaland Liberation Organisation (GLO) leader Chhatre Subba has joined the BJP.

"The wind this time is in favour of BJP, which is in favour of smaller states. I have, therefore, joined the party as I feel that it is only BJP that can give Darjeeling a separate Gorkhaland state," Subba told reporters yesterday announcing his decision to join BJP.

Chhatre was held as the prime accused in the assassination attempt on GNLF leader Subhas Ghising on February 10, 2001 and jailed for a decade. He was finally acquitted in the case and released on September 2011.

Once considered to be a close aide of Ghising, Subba fell out with his mentor after Ghising had signed the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (DGHC) accord in 1988.

He broke away from the GNLF and had launched GLO to campaign for statehood.
