An 11-month-old boy was mauled to death by a jackal in his house at Ghanour village situated in the buffer zone of Sanjay Tiger Reserve (STR), a top official said today.

"The incident took place yesterday when the jackal entered the house where the child, Shivam, was sleeping in the open backyard while his father was away for work," said Dilip Kumar, Chief Conservator of Forest, STR.

Shivam was injured critically, mainly in his face, in the attack.

"The moment his father returned, he shooed away the animal and rushed the kid to hospital, but he succumbed on way to hospital," the official added.

An ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh has been announced by state government to the kin of the deceased.
