Child sustains bullet injury

A two-and-half year old boy suffered bullet wounds while he was sleeping with his father at Pheija Leitong Makha Leikai in Manipur's Imphal West district today, ahead of tomorrow's by-election of Thongju Assembly constituency falling in the district.

The minor boy identified as Chirom Lanchenba Meitei was sleeping with his father Chirom Sarat Meitei at his residence at Thongju Part II area, when at around 1 am the father heard five/six gun shots and was awakened by the crying child, a police officer said.

On discovering that the boy received bullet wounds during the firing by unidentified persons, the father took the child to Sija Hospital, they said.
 

The child was operated upon to remove the bullet lodged in his back, the officer said, adding that the minor was out of danger now.

The reason behind the sudden firing and who shot the child, were being probed, the officer said.

Meanwhile, all those having licenced guns were asked to deposit the weapons to the local police station.
