"Children have to carry school bags much more than their own weight. The burden of syllabus should be such that students can cope according to their age. The burden of syllabus should be reduced," Banerjee said while speaking at a Teacher's Day function here.
Speaking about parental pressure, she said, "They want students to be first in studies, in swimming, in singing and painting and everything.
"This causes a lot of tension and stress among students which should be avoided," she said.
She felicitated 100 teachers on the occasion.
Banerjee said a college and a university exclusively for girls at Diamond Harbour in South 24 Parganas district was being considered by the state government.
