Chinese State Councellor Dai Bingguo who held talks with National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon here today described Gujral as "a senior politician and great leader of India".
He also recalled the late Prime Minister's contribution towards the improvement of India-China ties.
Dai urged Menon to covey the Chinese government's condolences to Gujral's family.
The former Prime Minister died on November 30 at the age of 92 at a Gurgaon hospital after a brief illness.
Menon who arrived here yesterday on a three-day visit also handed over a message from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh congratulating the Chinese Communist Party on successfully holding its once-in-a-decade leadership change.
