China today cut its growth target for this year to "around 6.5 per cent", as the world's second-largest economy faces an array of challenges.

The target, detailed in a report to be presented to the Chinese parliament later in the day, was lower than last year's range of 6.5 to seven per cent.

The economy ended up growing 6.7 per cent in 2016, its slowest rate in more than a quarter of a century.
