China's Internet regulator and the tourism administration have launched a three-month campaign to crackdown on misleading advertisements on tourism websites.

Some tourism websites feature false, misleading or vague advertising and there are privacy issues related to customers data, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) and China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) said.

The campaign will focus on tourism web portals, travel agency websites, online booking service websites, tourist area websites and mobile apps.

The authorities said they will punish and shut down websites that are found to have flouted regulations, and urged websites to ensure their customers' rights.

The CAC and CNTA called on the public to inform on tourism websites.
