Army today organised a series of events, including an air show, combat freefall by paratroopers and a display by the force's special dog unit, as part of centenary celebrations of the Srinagar-based Chinar Corps at Badami Bagh cantonment here.

Hot air ballooning, along with martial display of Khukhri and Gatka dance forms were among the attractions during the celebrations.

Tribute was paid to fallen soldiers of the Corps at the beginning of the event.

Among those present were a number of former Chinar Corps Commanders including Lt Gen (retd) Nirbhay Sharma, the Governor of Mizoram.

During the event, a cycling and mountaineering expedition were also flagged off.

The Chinar Corps was raised at Port Said in Egypt on January 12, 1916 and is observing centenary celebrations this year.

"This year is being celebrated as the Centenary year, re-dedicating the Chinar Corps to the State and people of Kashmir," Chinar Corps Commander Lt Gen Satish Dua said.

He said the journey of the Corps has been integral to Jammu and Kashmir and its people.

Army shall continue to work towards development and progress of the state and its people, he said.
