Chinese airlines bought 276 new planes from both Boeing and Airbus last year, marking the largest expansion in China's booming aviation industry.

US aviation giant Boeing delivered a record 143 planes to China, a 60 per cent increase as compared to 2012.

The company said it secured 230 orders from the Chinese market in 2013. It will see plane delivery exceed 140 again this year.

Marc Allen, Boeing China president, forecast that China will need 5,580 new planes in the next 20 years, with a total value of USD 780 billion, official media here reported.

The company delivered its 1,000th plane to China in April 2013.

Not lagging far behind, Boeing's competitor Airbus delivered 133 airplanes produced from Toulouse in France, Hamburg in Germany and Tianjin in China to Chinese customers, accounting for 20 per cent of its global delivery, state-run Global Times reported.

"The high delivery is mainly due to the strong market demand, as China and the Middle East are now two booming markets globally," said Lin Zhijie, an independent market watcher.

China mainly purchases new airplanes to meet the growing demand, compared to the developed countries such as US which now mainly buy airplanes to update old fleets, Lin said, predicting that high delivery trend will continue for another five years in China.

According to Boeing, the company gained 230 orders in Chinese market in 2013, covering all the single-aisle and twin-aisle airplanes.

Among those orders, 130 were signed with leasing companies.

In comparison, Airbus said over 200 aircraft were booked in 2013 and 60 airplanes for China Aviation Supplies Holding Company.

However, the delivered airplanes were mainly ordered during 2009 and 2011, and warned that the transport capacity in China has now become excessive, officials said.
