Press Trust of India New Delhi
Rising imports of ceramic products from China are adversely impacting profit margins of domestic manufacturers, Assocham said today.

Imports of Chinese ceramic products into India has increased to USD 484 million in 2012 from USD 237 million in 2002, it said.

"China has emerged as the major supplier of ceramic products to India thereby adversely impacting profit margins of domestic producers so much so that certain ceramic units are facing closure," the chamber said in a statement.

Assocham asked the government to look into the matter "so that the industry can work on full throttle towards its true potential".

It also asked the industry to manufacture innovative product lines to strengthen India's export performance.

Besides China, Germany, Italy, France and Austria are other major exporters of ceramic products into India, it said.

Ceramic products include sanitary ware, refractories and tiles.

Domestic players are also facing the problem of rising cost of raw material, inadequate power and gas supply, it added.

"Anomalies pertaining to duties on import of raw materials also needs to be corrected so that price competitiveness of domestic industry does not get affected," the chamber said.
