China is planning to recruit more college students in its armed forces this year as part of its modernisation drive.

According to military officials, recruiters should supervise and guide college students in the process, including student registration, pre-recruitment requirements and preferential recruitment conditions, in order to raise both the quantity and quality of recruited students.

Armed forces should also enhance quantified assessment in their recruitment methods to ensure a high quality of students, state-run Xinhua news agency quoted officials as saying.

Those young people with outstanding performance in disaster relief, and those who are the children or siblings of soldiers who have died while on active duty, should be the priorities for recruiters.

This year's recruitment period is set to start on August 1 and conclude on September 30, as those with a high school education or above will make up the majority of the recruitment.

China has been in the past few years have stepped up recruitment of graduates to handle the new weapon systems while it announced plans to reduce troop levels.

While President Xi Jinping in 2015 announced plans to cut three lakh troops out of the 2.3 million-strong world's largest standing military, recently the People's Liberation Army (PLA) has said it will downsize its strength of its army to under a million in a biggest troop cut in its history.

In a biggest move to restructure the military, the PLA will increase the numbers of other services including navy and missile forces, the PLA Daily, the official newspaper of the Chinese military said on June 12.
