A former Chinese county official has been detained for allegedly raping underage girls who were forced into prostitution, officials said today.

The official Tang, who was serving as deputy head of the publicity department of Huitong County in Hunan Province, was sacked from his post following rape charges.

According to the county government, the local public security bureau received a report in November about the people forcing the underage girls into prostitution.

Initial investigations showed that five suspects, all unemployed, had profited from forcing five teenage girls into prostitution from October.

Tang and others paid several times for sex with the girls, three of whom are school dropouts, state run Xinhua news agency quoted police as saying.
