Noted litterateur and activist Mahasweta Devi today expressed shock at the plight of investors in the Saradha chit fund scam and demanded an inquiry into the matter.

"I would like to call for an inquiry into this. There should be an inquiry," the Magsaysay awardee told PTI when asked if she would support the demand for a CBI probe into the chit fund scam.

She hoped that the West Bengal government would do its needful to minimise the plight of so many people.

To a question if she would put forward any suggestion to the state government regarding steps to curb chit fund activities, she said, "The government will do whatever it deems fit."

Referring to the lack of development in tribal Jangalmahal region, Mahasweta Devi, who is known for her work among the Kheria Sabar tribe, said, "There is still a large scope to provide basic medical facilities, road infrastructure, drinking and irrigation water in the region."

"I am not going to confront the state government, but I would definitely suggest that there is enough scope to improve the basic infrastructure in road, irrigation, medical and drinking water in the tribal-dominated Jangalmahal," she added.
