Christie's second India auction in Mumbai this December

After its record inaugural sale in India last year, Christie's has listed a second auction this December, with highlights including modern masterpieces by Jehangir Sabavala, Bhupen Kakkar and Tyeb Mehta.

"Christie's announces that it will hold its second auction of Modern and Contemporary Art in Mumbai on December 11," auctioneers said today.

The debut auction in 2013 established the highest price for a work of art ever sold in India and generated a total sale Rs 96,59,37,500 (USD 15,455,000) doubling pre-sale expectations with 98 per percentage of lots on offer getting sold.

Early highlights of this year include "The Green Cape" a 1974 painting by Jehangir Sabavala with a pre-sale estimate of Rs 1.2 crore - Rs 1.80 crore. An early work by Tyeb Mehta, "Girl in Love" is being offered with an estimate of Rs 70 lakhs - Rs 9 lakhs and Bhupen Khakhar's 1970s reverse painting on glass "Untitled (Chavanu), has an estimate of Rs 40 lakhs - Rs 60 lakhs.
 

"A separate section of contemporary works by artists including Subodh Gupta, Rashid Rana, Mithu Sen, Thukral and Tagra, Nilima Sheikh and Bharti Kher will be offered to benefit the Delhi based artist residency Khoj International Artists Association," auctioneers said.

All the artists have donated works to Khoj exclusively for the upcoming sale.

The sale is scheduled to take place at the Taj Mahal Palace hotel here with a pre-sale public viewing beginning December 9. Viewings of a selection of works is also scheduled in New Delhi between November 28-30.
