Punjab's industry body Chamber of Industrial & Commercial Undertaking (CICU) today sought immediate withdrawal of notification regarding the mode of wage payments to factory workers, saying they don't have bank accounts.

"Industrial sector in Punjab is mainly based on migrated labour from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, who are not having their accounts in banks. Therefore, they will not cooperate with industrialists for accepting wages through cheques or credit in their bank accounts," said CICU President Avtar Singh in a statement issued here.

Describing it as an "anti-industry" move, he claimed, "This uncalled for move will accelerate shifting of migrated labour to their states thereby causing unrest and shortage in Punjab."

Industry body claimed that it was already making accurate and timely wages to factory workers in three to four installments in a month.

In addition to this payment of petty expenses is also being made to workers as per their genuine requirements during the month, said Singh.

CICU appealed Punjab government to withdraw this notification as state's industrial sector is already "reeling under adverse economic" scenario.

Punjab Labour department on July 22 had asked all factories, commercial establishments and shops in the state to pay wages to their workers either by cheque or directly transferring them online in the bank accounts.

The step was taken to ensure transparent labour relations besides checking exploitation and underpayment of workers.
