Demanding a halt on contractual appointments in government, PSUs and private firms, the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) today announced to stage a demonstration of contractual labourers here on September 22.
"Workers from major PSUs in steel, coal and aluminium sectors as well as NTPC and others will participate in the demonstration," CITU vice-president Bishnu Mohanty told reporters here.
Stating that the condition of contractual labourers were precarious in every sector, Mohanty demanded a minimum wage of Rs 10,000 for the workers.

Demanding amendments in the Contract Labour Act, 1970, the CITU, CPI(M)'s labour wing, held both the state and the Central government responsible for the plights of lakhs of labourers who suffer despite working daily for over ten hours.
"By not amending the Contract Labour Act, the government simply encourages Capitalism in the country," said CITU state president Lambodar Nayak.
Nayak said a convention of trade unions would be organised at New Delhi on September 15 where members would raise their voices against the existing Act, demanding a total halt of contractual appointments.
