Kolkatans woke up to a pleasantly cool morning today as night temperatures went down by five notches at one go below 20 degree celsius mark for the first time this season.

The city recorded minimum temperature at 16.6 degree celsius from 21.5 degrees celsius yesterday, the Met department said here.

Sriniketan was coldest place in the plains in West Bengal this morning. It recorded a minimum of 11.6 degrees celsius.

It was followed by Asansol (13.2 degree c), Bankura (13.5 degree C) and Diamond Harbour (14.2 degree C), the Met department said.

With the cold northerly winds from the Himalayas reaching the Gangetic plains, night temperature is likely to remain around 15 degree celsius for the next few days in the city, the weatherman said.

Children were seen donning sweaters or blazers on their way to school in the morning, while many other people also put on light woolens for the first time this winter.

Depression over the Bay of Bengal during the past few weeks had robbed the city of the usual November chill as rains and cloudy weather prevented the night temperatures from going below 20 degree celsius.
