A resolution to this effect was passed in a meeting of the Standing Committee of the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDM here.
It noted that India accounts for the largest number of deaths due to rabies and in the country, Delhi tops the list.
Trans-Yamuna areas, which are under the jurisdiction of EDMC, report the highest number of such cases, it noted.
"Now, we have a polio eradication programme across the country and Delhi has become polio-free as no cases of polio are reported these days. In this way, we need to make Delhi rabies free also," the resolution said.
"We have to prepare a programme to make the city rabies free within a month," the resolution said.
It noted that many people die as anti-rabies vaccines are not made available to them.
The resolution also emphasised the need for anti-rabies vaccination of pet dogs as well as stray dogs. "The new-born dogs should also be vaccinated and it should be a continous process," it said.
