Civil defence worker killed in Dussehra stampede

A 30-year-old civil defence worker has been killed in a stampede here on the occasion of Dussehra.

The incident took place yesterday when a group of people, who had come to witness the Dussehra festivity at the Ramlila ground here, started looting sticks from the Ravana effigy, DIG Omkar Singh said.

A stampede ensued and the victim Dharmendra, who was posted at the Ramlila ground, tried to intervene in the situation, he said.

The effigy fell on the victim amid the chaos, Singh said.

He was rushed to the hospital where he was declared brought dead, police said, adding three others received minor injuries in the incident.
 

The body has been sent for postmortem, they added.
