Chief Justice of India H L Dattu today voiced concerns over pendency of cases in the courts and asked the lawyers to play a role in reducing the accumulated arrears in courts.

"We must therefore adopt ourselves with changing situation - both domestic and global. It is essential for the members of the legal fraternity to ensure that the present state of affairs, of undisposed of cases and unresolved disputes change-urgently and quickly," he said.

Delivering his Presidential address commemorating 150 years of Madras Bar Association, he said a lawyer was not merely confined to wearing only black robes in the Court but to wear an additional robe of a social reformer.

Observing that Judiciary was known as the third pillar of Democracy, the CJI said it cannot function without the judicious and proficient services of the members of the Bar.

Likening lawyers to "oil to the machinery" for smooth functioning of Judiciary, he said it was the responsibility of each partners of the system to ensure that the courts function ceaselessly.

Praising the Madras Bar for its significant contribution to the highest courts of this land, he said the words and actions of senior, distinguished members of the bar are to be taken by the present legal fraternity as a guiding force.

He said the Madras Bar has produced a galaxy of eminent, erudite and legendary lawyers like Sir S Varadachary Sir S Srinivasa Ayyangar Sir Alladi Krishnaswamy Ayyar and M K Nambiar.

"Their words and actions have long served the legal fraternity as a guiding force, often steering us back on to our hallowed path to achieving Justice, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity among the citizens of this great Nation," he said.
