A close collaboration between the state tourism industry and Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan would help encourage cultural tourism in Tamil Nadu Chief Justice of India P Sathasivam said here today.

"I suggest that the Tamil Nadu tourism industry work in close alliance with institutions like Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan for widening the potential cultural tourism in the state," he said.

Inaugurating Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's Naatya Utsav here, the CJI said Tamil Nadu is a storehouse of cultural heritage, which has to its credit eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Holding that there is an immediate need and duty for all parents and grandparents to step in to preserve our heritage, he said, "Please do remember when I say this, I am in no way against the western culture or am a traditionalist, rather I wish to infer that it is always good to have exposure to diverse culture, it will certainly increase our perspective and will help us lead a cosmopolitan life."

He said an important query that persisted in the minds of Indians was the difficulty of preserving culture in changing times.

"I hope all of us agree that culture evolves with time and it is not a stagnant factor. At the same time, it is the best of culture, we carry forward as the heritage of that time to the future generations."

Earlier, he honoured danseuse Mallika Sarukka with the 'Lifetime Achievement Award.
