Clash in Gonda over removal of idol

The removal of an idol from a "government land" led to arson as agitated locals pelted stones at a police team and torched vehicles and shops in Paraspur town of the district.

Four persons were arrested after an FIR was lodged against 14 people and same number of unidentified persons, police said.

Those arrested have been remanded in judicial custody by a local court.

The incident took place in Rajapur locality last evening, when the administration attempted to remove an idol allegedly placed on a government land, police said.

The locals got agitated and started pelting stones on policemen and officials. They also torched vehicles and shops in the area.
 

Later, District Magistrate Roshan Jacob and Superintendent of Police R P Singh Yadav reached the spot and controlled the situation, they said.
