A class IX student allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan in his house in east Delhi's Kalyanpuri area here apparently fearing that he will fail in his examination, police said today.

The deceased, identified as Ankit Kaushal, was staying with his father Deepak Kaushal, mother Kamlesh and brother Ashwini at their residence in Kalyanpuri area, they said.

"The incident took place at around 2 pm yesterday when Ankit, who was a student of class IX at a private school, returned home after writing his exam. Expressing unhappiness over his exam, he locked himself in his room. When his mother went to check him after a while, she found him hanging from the ceiling fan," said a senior police official.

His mother then raised an alarm and following which neighbours gathered at the spot and he was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

Police have questioned the family members whether he was pressurised in any manner to get good marks in the ongoing examination.

Police has not recovered any suicide note from the spot but the circumstances point out toward exam stress to be the reason behind his extreme step.

"We will also question his friends and teachers of the school where he studied to ascertain whether he was facing any trouble in the school. An inquest proceeding has been initiated in this case," the police officer added.

The body was sent for a post mortem following which it would be handed over to the family, police said.
