IIT-Palakkad would begin functioning this year and classes will be held in a temporary building at present, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said here today.
"Steps have been taken to start the classes at IIT in a temporary building. Sanction has been accorded to acquire 500 acres of land for constructing a permanent campus," he said, speaking at the Palakkad phase of Mass Contact Programme.
Chandy also announced 15 other development projects for the district, including setting up a Cyber Park at Pattambi. "All the projects will be completed within a year," he added.

The Chief Minister said administrative sanction of Rs 360 crore has been given to construct the hospital building for the proposed Medical College Hospital under the Scheduled Tribe development department.
Of the 100 seats, 70 seats will be reserved for ST students. This is the only college of its kind in India, he pointed out.
It was also proposed to have a green triangle tourism circuit. A scheme titled 'Organic Palakkad project' with an aim to make the district the first organic assembly constituency also would be implemented, he added.
