Noted vocalist Manik Bhide was today chosen for the prestigious Bharatratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi award for year 2017-18 for her contribution in the field of music.
The Maharashtra government award, the highest in the category of performing arts, consist of Rs five lakh in cash, a plaque and citation, the Culture Ministry said in an official communication.
Born in Kolhapur in 1935, Bhide received encouragement from her parents to take up classical singing and later she became a singer of Jaipur-Atroli 'gharana'.

Bhide was invited by the All India Radio (AIR) as well from time to time to present some compositions, as per the communication.
The selection committee comprised Culture Minister Vinod Tawde, Pandit Keshav Ginde, Nathrao Neralkar and Kamlabai Bhonde.
Earlier, Kishori Amonkar, Pandit Jasraj, Prabha Atre, pandit Ram Narayan and Parvin Sultana were honoured with the this award.
