A cleric has alleged that an attempt was made to burn him alive by some persons when he was sleeping in his quarters at a mosque in Jattari township, about 40 km from here.

Police suspect that it could be a case of personal rivalry.

According to the complaint lodged by cleric Sabir Raza, he woke up last night to realise that the room, where he lives in in the mosque, was on fire, police said.

He alleged that someone had apparently broken a small window in the room and sprinkled petrol before setting it on fire, police said.

When he tried to rush out of the room, he discovered that the door had been locked from outside, he said in the complaint.

He somehow called some neighbours on his cellphone who rescued him and took him to the police station.

A police offical said that the matter appeared to be linked to some personal rivalry.

The cleric hails from Bihar and has been serving at the mosque for the past one year.

Senior SP Rajesh Pandey told PTI that he has deputed a circle officer to investigate the matter.

Pandey said that he was hopeful that the case will be solved very soon.
