Criticising the Trinamool Congress for not keeping its poll promise, hundreds of Muslim clerics today organized a rally here demanding a hike in their allowances and residential apartments for Imams as promised by the ruling party during elections.

"The CM had started giving an honorarium to Imams and Moizzins of Rs 2,500 and Rs 1,000 respectively. We believe that the amount, which was already too small, had no appreciation in over five years now. The prices of essentials and vegetables have increased over the years," Md Kamruzzaman, general secretary of the All Bengal Minority Youth Federation (ABMYF), said.

He demanded that the that the allowance of the Imams and Muzziens be increased from 2,500 and 1,000 to 10,000 and 6,000 respectively.

Members of around 30 organisations of Imams and Moizzins today participated in the meeting organised by the ABMYF at Rani Rashmoni Avenue.

"Mamata Banerjee had promised that Imams would receive homes under the 'Nijo Jomi Nijo Griho' housing scheme but no Imam has received anything so far. The TMC government should keep the promises it made during the elections," he said.
