Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ambitious plan to clean the Ganges was lauded today by former US President Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary, as they hoped that it would send a message to other countries as well.

"Your efforts at cleaning the Ganga will send a message to others in Asia," former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told Modi.

On his part, Bill Clinton thanked the Indian Prime Minister for undertaking cleaning of Ganga.

"It is a sacred project and smart approach," he conveyed to Modi during a 45-minute-long meeting.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj was also present at the meeting Modi had with the Clintons, where Swaraj and Hillary warmly hugged each other.

Earlier yesterday, Modi had also asked NRIs living in the US to contribute to his government's initiative to clean Ganga and said thousands of crores have already been spent on this project by previous governments without much headway.
