Sonali Tea Garden, which has been closed since November last year following the murder of its owner allegedly by agitated labourers, reopened today under a new management, labour department officials said.

The decision to reopen the tea garden at Mal block of Jalpaiguri district, where about 400 labourers used to work, was taken at a tripartite meeting in Siliguri yesterday.

The new owner, Sanjay Dutta, had told the meeting that the wage would be Rs 122.50 per day and the pending dues would be cleared in three installments, said Babulal Oraon, trade union leader of the garden.

Rajesh Jhunjhunwala, the previous owner of the garden, was hacked to death on November 22 last year allegedly by workers after talks to sort out the dispute over payment of long pending wage arrears failed.
