The contribution of eco-clubs in schools and colleges in increasing the green cover in the city today came in for appreciation from Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.
"The eco clubs have played an important role in expansion of greenery in Delhi. They have contributed substantially in environment protection," the Chief Minister said addressing a two-day annual meet of eco clubs.
The Chief Minister said the city government has been organising environment awareness campaigns with support from eco-club and will continue to do so in coming years.
Speaking on the occasion, Environment Secretary Sanjiv Kumar listed environment friendly initiatives taken up in schools and colleges.
He said that vermi-composting has been set up in 150 government schools as part of efforts to solid waste management.
Kumar said mushroom cultivation has been introduced in 80 schools and colleges while herbal gardens have been set up in 80 schools and colleges. He said paper recycling units are functioning in 250 schools.
