Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma today ruled out institution of a CBI inquiry into the death of a police officer unless otherwise there are any other indications captured by the government doubting the outcome of the investigation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the state police.

"Immediately after receiving information on the incident, the order for an independent inquiry has been given," Sangma told reporters at the sideline of a cabinet meeting held here on Wednesday.

He informed that the special investigation team (SIT) will be supervised by one of the senior police officer, Vivek Syiem SP (City), East Khasi Hills District under the overall supervision of the senior officer H Marbaniang IGP CID.

"The SIT has been given 90 days to complete the investigation," he informed.

The SIT was notified by the Police Headquarters after it decided to registered a murder case into death of Sub Inspector PJ Marbaniang, who was the in charge of Patharkhmah police outpost in Ri Bhoi District.

On January 24, Marbaniang was found critically injured with a gunshot in his head in his official quarter at Patharkhmah along the inter-state border with Assam, a day after detaining several coal trucks without valid papers.

While a senior district police official was quoted as terming it as a case of suicide, his family members had formally lodged an FIR for his death.

The chief minister said, "Unless otherwise any other indications are captured by the government to doubt the actual outcome of the investigation which is expected to be based on their complete professionalism."

"I would like to reassure the affected family whose grief we equally share that we must have amount of confidence entrusted on this team and they are own people whom we expect to do justice to the responsibility task to them," he said.

According to him, this proactive measure is taken because of that certain development which has made us feel that there must be some different approach to investigation into this case.
