Nearly two months after sustaining a minor injury in stone pelting allegedly by opposition LDF here, the 'Mass Contact Programme' of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy got underway in the district today amid tight security.
Speaking on the occasion, Chandy said the programme had benefited people who had come to get their grievances redressed. "Grievances of people will be attended to and there is no rest for government and officials," he said.
Earlier, police had blocked Left Democratic Front protests near the venue over the solar panel scam issue.
Nearly 3000 policemen, including armed personnel of Thunderbolt Commandos set up to deal with the Maoist threat, were deployed in and around the venue and closed circuit surveillance system was also put in place.
The ongoing campaign by CPI(M)-led LDF over solar panel scam had turned violent on October 27 as protesters allegedly pelted stones at Chandy in this town, where he had arrived for some engagements, including the valedictory of the state police athletic meet.
Chandy had suffered minor injuries and was hospitalised at Thiruvananthapuram Medical college hospital. He was discharged on October 29.
CPI(M) leaders have maintained that their party had nothing to do with the incident as physically targeting the Chief Minister was not part of their campaign demanding his resignation over the solar panel scam.
