Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma today urged NEIGRIHMS authorities here to double the number of students pursuing MBBS courses from 50 to 100 to enable full utilisation of the infrastructure available with the Institute.
"It would be in the fitness of things to have the seats increased from current 50 to 100 as this would ensure full and improved utilisation of the infrastructure available," the chief minister said while addressing the third Annual Day function of the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS).
The Chief Minister also urged the NEIGRIHMS director Prof A G Ahangar to pursue the same with the Centre as the state is keen on marketing itself as a destination for health care and tourism.

Recalling the magnanimity of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in setting up NEIGRIHMS to bridge the huge gap in Health services in the region, Mukul said it was incumbent upon the state and the Institute to make optimum use of the resource and also stressed the need to focus on this crucial sector, to see how providing quality health care for the people can become sustainable.
He also said that his Government was trying its best to improve the Human Development in the form of Megha Health Insurance Scheme to take care of the health expenses of the people covering the whole population of the State.
The Chief Minister also emphasised on the need to provide the same kind of support that is given to Public Health also to Private Health sector and the need for more research and study by the Institute saying that the State is grappling around for vaccines for all kinds of diseases that are around us.
