Coast Guard observes international 'Coastal Clean-up Day'

Indian Coast Guard (ICG) today observed 'International Coastal Clean-up day' at Porbanadar coast in Gujarat.

"International coastal clean-up day is observed every year by millions of people all around the world on every third Saturday of September," the statement by Defence PRO said.

"In India, Indian Coast Guard coordinates this event. In Gujarat, Coast Guard Regional Headquarters, Gandhinagar has coordinated this under the guidance of Inspector General (IG) Kuldeep Singh Sheoran of Coast Guard Region (North-West) and Deputy Inspector General N K Kaul at Porbandar coast," the statement said.

It added that the coastal clean up event aims at creating awareness among general populace on the detrimental effects of litter on our marine environment and significance of clean sea for marine flora and fauna.
 

"Indian Coast Guard units at Porbandar, Okha, Vadinar, Mundra, Jakhau, Veraval, Pipavav and Surat, along with various central and the state government agencies, the students from school and colleges, NGOs and volunteers from local populace focused on cleaning of beaches," the statement said.

The main aim of this event was to spread awareness amongst general public about the importance of clean sea and beaches, it said.
