The Coast Guard today rescued six fishermen stranded in an uninhabited island off the Tamil Nadu coast for the past three days without food and water.

The Coast Guard Hovercraft ACV H-90 sighted the fishermen in the island known as the third island, a release said.

The fishermen were in a dehydrated state and they were provided with food and water. They were brought to the Coast Guard Station at Mandapam near Rameswaram and were handed over to fisheries department officials.

Fourteen fishermen from South Pamban were fishing from July 28. However, on July 31, while returning with a fish catch of around 500 kg, the vessel capsized and after a 24-hour struggle, they managed to reach the third island on August one. While six got stranded, seven others managed to reach the shore and one drifted away.

Five persons off Andhra Pradesh coast were rescued last month, it said, adding, the Coast Guard Eastern region has so far rescued 168 persons.
