Coast Guard ship repatriates 66 Indian, 30 Lankan fishermen

A day after they were released from Sri Lankan jails, 66 Indian fishermen were today repatriated by a Coast Guard ship.

It also handed over 30 Sri Lankan fishermen, who were released by Tamil Nadu government, to the island nation authorities.

ICGS Vishwast repatriated the fishermen at the International Maritime Boundary Line close to Kankesanthurai in Sri Lanka around 5.10 pm, an official release said.

Sri Lankan government and Tamil Nadu goverment have exchanged the release of these fishermen, detained over a period of time, as a humanitarian gesture.

Hundreds of fishermen from Tamil Nadu, detained by Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly fishing in their territorial waters, had been released in the past several months.
